BINDI COLE CHOCKA

THE ROYAL WOMEN'S HOSPITAL CONTEMPORARY ABORIGINAL ART COMMISSION: BINDI COLE CHOCKA IN ASSOCIATION WITH CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY.

In 2012, CCP and the Royal Women's Hospital (the Women's) formed a partnership to commission Bindi Cole Chocka to create two large photographs for the foyer of the Women's.

Bindi Cole Chocka is a Melbourne-based photographer and artist of Wathaurung and Australian descent. She has previously exhibited at CCP, as well as nationally and internationally, and has won several awards. To develop this commission Chocka consulted with staff, patients and the Aboriginal Advisory Committee at the Women's.

From these conversations, she created 

Seedtime and Harvest, two works that honour and celebrate the hospital's relationship with Aboriginal women. Richly symbolic and drawing on native seeds, flora and emu feathers associated with her family, Chocka created two monumental tableaux which form the basis of the photographs. Seedtime gently acknowledges the past and Harvest celebrates the present and future of the Women's engagement with the Aboriginal community. Chocka's work will be on on public view in the main entrance of the Women's, next to the information desk, indefinitely.
